Do computers dream of electric sheep?

If you're here and reading this it's more than likely that you are already aware of the "indie web". A term coined by Tantek Çelik and Amber Case. However, if you haven't heard of it before you can think of it as a community of people who want to maintain control over their social data. Think back to the early 2000s and Neocities, where so many personal sites and blogs were the norm.

In the modern day interacting with the internet is such a sterile, bland, and boring experience. With the invention of modern social media we very quicky lost all the customization and personality that came with people learning how to setup their own pages. Customization was such a popular thing that early social media like MySpace allowed you to style your page with custom HTML and CSS. Even YouTube up until 2013 allowed you to change a lot about your channel page.

I unfortunately wasn't around for this era of the internet. I had some slight experience with it but it's all vague memories from a child's brain. But I have this "anemoia" for this period. A period that just seems so much more... unique? It makes me feel regretful, never being able to experience it. Fast forward to 2023, a game that I've been keeping my eye on, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk releases and with it a new modding community arose. Shortly after the first multiplayer mod was released, Slop Crew, developed by notnite.

Now you may ask, why are we talking about a multiplayer mod? It's simple, notnite's website lead me down the rabbit hole that is 88x31 and subsequently the indie web. For me this was a breath of fresh air, seeing all these website tied together with 88x31 pixel banners. So much personality, creativity, and a little bit of chaos. The experience I was looking for. I have no idea if you'll ever read this notnite, but if you do, thank you for making that mod. You're directly responsible for this site even becoming a thing.
